Lowell’s novels regarding extraterrestrial life and canals on Mars would evoke the public s attention. Which would cause the red planet to be under debate whether or not there is proof that contemporary life does exist on Mars. This debate would also begin to question Lowell’s validity as a professional astronomer. Since his theories had no factual proof or evidence, it was natural to question his knowledge of astronomy.
